We spanked very rarely, but had no problems doing it. I never connected it with Proverbs or scripture. It was effective in our upbringing when used judiciously and wisely, and we tried to do the same.
I don’t believe a toddler can be communicated with without the occasional physical attention-getter. A swat on the butt isn’t “hitting” in a way that will ever be equated with violence. Done rightly, it’s effective. If you don’t believe in it, or can’t do it and be 100% in the game afterward, then don’t do it. If both parents don’t agree, don’t do it. And since you are in Rochester, be aware that you may get turned over to social workers by neighbors or co-workers. Itsafact.
It allows a level of communication that words don’t. And it doesn’t always work, especially with very resistant kids.
Far be it from me to recommend Dobson, but you ought to check out “The Strong Willed Child” and consider his pov.
And if every complementarian on this blog doesn’t say you must spank because Proverbs says so, I’m going to taunt you for a week. (jn)
